St. Maarten Marine Trade Associations agree on cooperation

St. Maarten – Board members of the St. Maarten Marine Trades Association (SMMTA) and Metimer, the French side’s marine association, met recently to discuss how they could collectively work together to improve the marine industry on both sides of the island. Both associations recognize and agree that St. Maarten/St. Martin is one destination and the issues that affect one side of the island have a direct impact on the other. Because of the different legal jurisdictions separating the island, mariners are often confused about procedures and laws in place that affect them as they migrate from one side of the island to the next.

Both the SMMTA and Metimer have committed to work together to share information and assist each other in insuring that all visitors to the island and local boaters are well informed and that their interests are looked out for. The associations also vowed to work with the two island governments to better inform them about the intricacies of the marine industry and what needs to be done to protect, improve, and grow this increasingly important segment of our tourism product.
“We are extremely pleased to be working with Metimer on the issues that affect both sides of the island. We are also very thankful to them for assisting us with the promotion of Spotlight St. Maarten as this event is designed to promote not only St. Maarten but also the French side and the surrounding islands,” St. Maarten Marine Trades Association President Brian Deher stated.

The meeting was also used as an opportunity for the SMMTA to update Metimer on the initiatives underway for Spotlight St. Maarten which will be held from November 11 to December 17. Several of Metimer’s members have already started offering discounts to Spotlight St. Maarten attendees and a number of the events will be held on the French side. Spotlight St. Maarten will be aggressively marketed to the boating community during the upcoming Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show.
Additional meetings between the two marine associations are planned for the future in order to continue to foster a synergistic working relationship.
