St. Maarten (DCOMM) – The Fire Department started its campaign to highlight and promote smoke detectors on October 1, when it hooked up a smoke detector in the house of a resident in Union Farm. The family received instructions on how they can protect their home better against fires and how to set up an emergency plan so that every family member knows what to do in case of a fire.

The 15-minute session was closed off with the installation of a smoke detector. Fire fighters also visited two other families in Dutch Quarter where they also installed smoke detectors

The smoke detectors are part of the Fire Department’s Fire Prevention Month activities for the month of October that are sponsored by Nagico Insurances.

Other companies already have committed to sponsor a month of installation of smoke detectors, and firefighters will continue to do a limited number of meetings and smoke detector-installations in the coming months.

Residents who want to have a smoke detector installed should call 543 13 18 for an appointment.
