St. Maarten Finance Minister Hiro Shigemoto: “I am sure it must be an oversight.”

St. Maarten –Finance Minister Hiro Shigemoto says he will be seeking clarification from the Board of the Committee for Financial Supervision (Cft) regarding comments made to the media last week Friday regarding the country’s nominee for the CFT board.

In a press release summarizing its visit to Curacao, St. Maarten and the BES islands the Cft stated that, “St. Maarten has not proposed a member as yet.” referring to the country’s representation on the Cft board as part of an explanation with respect to which islands have representatives on the board since the dismantling of the Netherlands Antilles.

“I am at odds with this statement, and the Council of Ministers will be seeking clarity with respect to such a statement which is totally untrue and is misinforming the people of St. Maarten. I am sure it must be an oversight on the part of the Cft and they will clarify what they have stated publicly,” Shigemoto said Sunday.

The Council of Ministers submitted its candidate, local businessman and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Directors of the St. Maarten Harbour Group of Companies Michel Soons, to the Dutch Minister of Kingdom Relations Piet Hein Donner months ago.

“At the moment Minister Donner has failed to submit the name to the Kingdom Council of Ministers for decision-making, and secondly, the Council of Ministers is still waiting to be informed of why this has not been done,” Shigemoto concluded.
