POSTED: 07/18/11 11:42 AM

St. Maarten – A delegation from the St. Maarten Senior Citizens and Pensioners Association are preparing to attend the first Dutch Caribbean seminar on aging. The seminar is being organized by the Confederation of Pensioners and Older Persons in Curacao (KOPAMKO), the Building Bridges Foundation and the University of Curacao. It will be held on the University’s campus from July 25 to July 28.

The seminar’s attendees will discuss several parts of the Madrid International Action Plan on Aging over the course of the conference. These include, in broad terms, older persons and development, advancing health and well being and ensuring enabling and supportive environments.

The gathering is a key part of the bottoms up approach that will lead to a report to the United Nations in February 2012 by the Kingdom of the Netherlands on implementation of the plan on aging, which includes a commitment that seniors should have equal access to human rights by 2012.

St. Maarten’s delegation plans to record the proceedings from next week’s conference and then re-air it here with English subtitles.
