St. Maarten Carnival gets new face

St. Maarten -“Come, Experience Life!” is the new tagline for the official St. Maarten Carnival logo. It will become the permanent slogan of Carnival as opposed to the thematic taglines that are used annually. The new logo was released yesterday and officially presented to Minister of Culture Silveria Jacobs the St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation (SCDF).

A creation of designer Cleon Fredicks, the logo features vibrant colors, intersperses various festival elements and is full of originality. SCDF President Michael Granger said that it is akin to the “Serious Fun” pitch that easily identifies the renowned Heineken Regatta. He believes that it was necessary to brand the event “to elevate the status of carnival regionally and internationally. In order to do that we needed a brand. We want it to give Carnival an image so that whenever people see it, they will know that we are talking about the greatest Carnival in the North Eastern Caribbean.”

Fredricks’ creation was just one of the many entries for a competition the SCDF launched to give the festival an identity logo. “Cleon is one of the island’s best if not the best designer on St. Maarten with a terrific creative eye. He put his heart and soul into this logo and we are very happy with the end product,” Granger added. Other marketing initiatives of the SCDF in collaboration with the tourist office include a Carnival store which will merchandise items with the unique SCDF branding and the relaunch of the foundation’s website. .

Minister Jacobs said that she was impressed with the work that SCDF had done in such a short period of time. She had been hosting meetings with the SCDF for the past two months, where the idea for branding Carnival was birthed. Fredricks’ design will now be seen globally as Carnival is promoted as part of the St. Maarten culture. For his efforts, he has won two season (year) passes to all Carnival activities.
