St. Maarten Businesses allowed to open New Year’s Day

POSTED: 12/30/14 12:14 AM

St. Maarten (DCOMM) – All businesses are allowed to open on New Year’s Day, the Ministry of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport & Telecommunications announced yesterday.

The Council of Ministers decided to grant a temporary dispensation to all businesses based on the Shop Closure National Ordinance in its recent meeting on December 23.  Businesses are allowed to open at their own discretion according to their regular opening hours.

The ministry reminds employers that employees have the right to proper compensation as regulated by law if they choose to open on January 1.

The exemption for the opening is based on the number of cruise ships that will be in port on New Year’s Day.
