GREAT BAY – Spotlight St. Maarten 2012 as organized by the St. Maarten Marine Trades Association (SMMTA) promises to be bigger and better than last year’s. This year will mark the second annual month long celebration of Spotlight St.Maarten and will be held from November 1 to November 30.
However, the main event will be held on November 17 at Port-de-Plaisance South Harbour with a Cooking Hot, Caribbean Style Chef Competition.
On that day two different competitions will take place; the best GuavaBerry pie and best Johnny cake will be a public contest opened to locals. Interested persons are being asked to bake 2 cakes or 2 dozen Johnny cakes to enter. The judges will taste first, and then the remaining pie and Johnny cakes will be available to all.
Then the top three Concours De Chef entrants will compete against three of St. Maarten’s top Chefs in true Caribbean style cook off. The SMMTA will be integrating Sundial Students to work with the professional chefs during all aspects of the competition. A sample plate of the food will be available to buy after the judging.

“One of the goals of Spotlight St. Maarten 2012 is to highlight the marine industry to local residents. We have chosen South Dock at Port de Plaisance so Aqua Mania will be offering lagoon boat tours, St Maarten Yacht Club will be exhibiting youth sailing and other recreational activities on the water. We will also be showing off Aqua Maniac, our first Build Your Future boat,” the SMMTA said in a press release.

The organizers are also looking for local artists and craft artisans to be a part of the craft fair.

Another goal of the event is to extend the yachting season by encouraging more yachts to home port in November, or at the very least to make a stop for fuel, provisioning and other services before the Antigua Charter Show, the organizers said.

St Maarten Time Share Association and Antillean Liquors are two of the main sponsors for the event.
