St. Maarten – With a total of 41 teams registered, the Johan Cruijff Court, in Belvedere buzzed with activity on the opening day of the annual interscholastic soccer tournament last Saturday which was organized by the St Maarten Soccer Educational Foundation (Smsef). Minister of Education, Sports and Culture Rhoda Arrindell was among those that present at the tournament, which is known for its high attendance rate of supporters in the form of soccer moms and dads, siblings, teachers and friends.

The schools involved are, M.P.C, St  Dominic High, C.I.A, Learning Unlimited, Leonald Conner, Oranje School, Sr. Regina, Montessori, Prins Willem Alexander, Dr. M.L. King Jr, Sr. Magda, Ruby Labega, Genevieve de Weever and the Leopold Bell school. Because of the nature of the game where there could only be one winner unless there was a draw, some of those soccer moms and dads went home disappointed and others were extremely satisfied, but the tournament still has a long way to go and things can change dramatically.

In the U-15 category for boys, Brian Clair, a student of the Milton Peters College rose to prominence after scoring 9 of the 17 goals for his team against St Dominic and his team mate Xavier York scored 4 and had five assists. But while the St Dominic team failed to penetrate the keeper, they did manage to cause a degree of concern outside the goal area. With a trip back to the drawing board, they might be able to improve as the tournament progresses.

In the Champions League encounter, Kael Richards who has shown tremendous all round improvement had the lions share for the St Magda team when they defeated Sr Regina by 9 goals to 5. Richards top scored with 5 and 4 assists.

The U-9 Combine selection demonstrated that where there is unity there is strength when they defeated the Sr Madga Rock Stars by 13 to nil. In another U-9 battle, Sr Regina defeated Sr Magda by 7 goals to 2. The top scorer was Milan Huyghue with 3 goals and 2 assist.

The audience was given their first taste of female competitiveness when Sr Regina defeated Sr Magda by 15 goals to 1. Top scoring for Sr Regina was Nacirfa Drijvers with 7 goals and 3 assist.  But the only goal by the Sr Magda team, who were making their debut turned out to be a memorable one when Lyvine Ignacio started her rush through the Sr Regina defense from her own half of the field finishing strongly with a great kick to score.

In the U-11 category for boys, Charlie Taylor netted 4 goals and had one assist when the C.I.A defeated the Leonald Conner School by 6-3. In the U-13 category, the C.I.A school went onto record their second win of the day when they defeated Sr Regina by 9 goals to nil. The top scorer was Jeremy Bryan with 4 goals and 2 assist.
