St. Maarten – Education Minister Silveria Jacobs issued an apology yesterday to more than 52 teachers and staff of the Public Education Services who have yet to receive their August salary payments. The minister called this an “a repeat of an undesirable situation” claiming that her ministry wanted to avoid it and is now working diligently to resolve the situation.
Jacobs explained that the bureaucracy involved in the process to issue payments resulted in the delay.
“It is something that we have to work on getting it done on time,” the minister suggested, as she had done on several prior occasions.
“Processes have not finalized for new teachers either; that is still pending,” she added.
Teachers who were already in the system and may have been up for renewal of contracts or heading to permanent service may have also be part of those affected group. If their paperwork was not submitted to the Department of Salaries on time, they were also thrown out of the system, the minister revealed.
Minister Jacobs assured that that affected would be compensated by next week based on discussions she is having with the Ministry of Finance.
