Sol training for marinas

St. Maarten – A training session organized by SOL Antilles was held last Tuesday. A number of marinas attended the session which was divided in two parts. The first part of the session focused on the marina operations and procedures and the second part dealt with the aspect of oil spill.

According to a release of SOL Antilles this training is done annually just before the high season, but it was the first time that the training of oil spill was added in a separate session. It was also the first time that the fire extinguisher training for service stations and marinas was conducted with the assistance of the Fire Department.

The oil spill training consisted of a theoretical session and a practical session where the spill equipment was deployed. The participants had an opportunity to participate to a ‘hands on’ training with Sol’s quick response oil spill cart which can be deployed without delay in case of an oil spill. With the assistance of Island Water World Marina the practical session took place at its facility where the use of the oil skimmer was demonstrated.  This machine has the capacity to remove floating oil from water.

The training sessions were attended by staff members of Bobby’s Marina, Island Water World Marina, La Palapa Marina and IGY Marinas.  Several government and environmental agencies were also invited to attend the oil spill training session along with three members from the Inspection Department/Vromi were present.

“Safety is very important to Sol and as a result, the company makes every effort to ensure its staff and associates are adequately trained,” concluded SOL management.
