St. Maarten – Sol Antilles Manager David Antrobus presented the St. Maarten Nature Foundation and the Haliborange Rotary/Roteract St. Maarten 2011 Spelling Bee Competition, which began at the weekend. Sol is one of two platinum sponsors for the spelling which will continue until the finals at the Bel Air Community Center on October 14. The other platinum sponsor is the ScotiaBank.

“It is the first time that St. Maarten is participating in the competition and we have been asked through Rotary to be one of the platinum sponsors to be a part of the Spelling Bee competition where a winner will be selected to attend the regional competition that is to be held in St. Kitts,” Antrobus said.

“This is something good for the youth and it would be a positive event,” Rotarian Ramish Manik said when he accepted the donation.

Eight schools are participating in the Spelling Bee, with a combined total of 24 students. Each school was originally allowed to field two candidates but the organizers allowed the eight confirmed schools to add a third person after several schools dropped out.

The donation to the Nature Foundation is 350 liters of fuel per month for the Nature Foundation patrol vessel. The donation will allow the foundation to do daily patrols in and out of the Marine Park. The foundation has only been able to patrol on infrequently.

“This donation comes at a very critical time since it will assist us in patrolling not only at daytime but also at nights and during the weekends,” Nature Foundation’s Manager Tadzio Bervoets said.
