St. Maarten – “The Jamaican Community on St. Maarten/Saint Martin is deeply saddened by the recent brutal murder of the American couple, Michael and Thelma King, and about the involvement of one of our nationals in the murder,” the board of the Jamaican Social and Heritage Foundation in St. Maarten stated in a press release issued yesterday.
The board extended condolences to the families and friends of the late couple. “We also deeply regret the bad publicity that this has caused for St. Maarten, which so many of us call home; it evidently affects the harmony and integral relations within the community at large. We support the police and prosecutors office in the investigation and prosecution of anyone found to be culpable for this terrible act,” the press release states.

“All of us, who call St. Maarten/Saint Martin home, including Jamaican immigrants, look forward to going about our daily lives without worrying about our safety. We condemn the actions of Jamaicans or anyone else who seek to change the image of “The Friendly Island” through crime and violence,” the board stated. “At the same time, we reject the idea being pushed by a few, that this or any other criminal act can be blamed on segments of the immigrant community. For the most part, Jamaicans here are hard-working people who contribute significantly to the building of this beloved island. We are a hard-working people and our contribution can be seen in almost every sector of the economy.”

The Jamaica Social & Heritage Foundation appeals in the press release to all Jamaicans to respect the laws of the land and desist from any involvement in crime or violence. “Let us uphold our moral principles and continue the tradition of hard work which we are known for, as we continue to play our part in building St. Maarten/St. Martin.”
