St. Maarten – The St. Maarten Hospitality and Trade Association says nominations are steadily coming in for the sixth annual Crystal Pineapple Awards Fundraiser. One of the most significant of the new categories is the teacher of the year award, which recognizes that teachers are instrumental in the development of our community.

“In the words of John F. Kennedy: Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest abilities, because in each of us there is a private hope and dream which, fulfilled, can be translated into benefit for everyone and greater strength of the nation,” the St. Maarten Hospitality and Trade Association’s Executive Director Valya Pantophlet stated in a press release.

She added, “I am sure that there is one teacher who stands out in each of your minds. A mentor, a role model, and in some cases a second parent who guided and motivated you to become the person you are today.  Now is your opportunity to show your gratitude. Nominate this person for a Crystal Pineapple Award!”

People can send in their nomination with a picture and motivation as to why a particular person should win the Teacher of the Year award. The winner, as with all categories, will be chosen based on a combination of number of votes casted and the motivation provided by the nominator. Only eight nominations are being accepted for this category; four for Elementary School Teacher of the Year, and four for Secondary School Teacher of the Year. Nominations close on October 28.

Nominations can be submitted at by clicking on the Crystal Pineapple Awards tab. People can use the link to view a list of categories with descriptions and complete the digital nomination form.
