Short circuit in feeder cable leads to massive outage

POSTED: 08/17/11 11:27 AM

St. Maarten – A substantial part of Dutch St. Maarten suffered a loss of power Tuesday because of a shortage in an incoming feeder cable that leads to the Zagersgut substation. The power first went off around 1:30 p.m. and affected only the areas in and around Philipsburg and beyond. The areas “over the hill” were not affected.
GEBE posted regular updates about the outage on its website and on Facebook, informing people of the affected areas and which had been switched back on. Things would grow complicated as the cable short circuited again at 5:00 p.m.
