Shigemoto’s appointment to Mot not confirmed

St. Maarten – Justice Minister Roland Duncan confirmed on Tuesday that former Finance Minister Hiro Shigemoto has applied for the function of Head of the Center for the Reporting of Unusual Financial Transactions (Mot). The appointment has not yet been finalized as all the applications are being reviewed and the minister has yet to make a recommendation to the Council of Ministers on who should be appointed.

“The position has been vacant since 10-10-10. There are more candidates for the job but the Council of Ministers has not made a decision yet. It will be done expeditiously because the position is on the list of critical vacancies,” Duncan said.

The justice minister has linked Shigemoto’s application to the fact that government will have to find a function suitable to his former position in the civil service as Director of Resources. Shigemoto was placed on inactive duty at the moment he became a minister. Since his ascent to the function of Minister his position as Director of Resources was taken out of the government organization. A similar function would have been Secretary General in the Ministry of Finance, but that function is occupied by Sheryl Hazel.

“He has the right to a suitable function matching his former position,” Duncan said.
