Shigemoto meets Donner and Voges on 2012 budgetPOSTED: 10/27/11 12:52 PM
St. Maarten – Finance Minister Hiro Shigemoto has discussed the budget for 2012 with both Dutch Minister of Kingdom Relations Piet Hein Donner and the Cabinet of St. Maarten’s Minister Plenipotentiary in The Hague. Shigemoto gave Donner a general update that the budget has been approved by the Council of Ministers and is currently going through the advisory process. His meeting at St. Maarten House looked specifically at the budget for the Cabinet of the Minister Plenipotentiary and the financial outlook for the different tasks of the cabinet.
The main point of Shigemoto’s discussion with Donner was 40 million guilders in debt repayment funds that St. Maarten is hoping to acquire. Shigemoto called the matter “very important” and pointed out that it is linked to the agreements for the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles.
Donner also used the meeting to suggest that the minister of health in both countries discuss patients from Saba and St. Eustatius making use of the St. Maarten Medical Center instead of them having to go to Guadeloupe or Martinique and for the minister of education in both countries to discuss the possibilities for students from Saba and St. Eustatius to make use of the Middle-level Vocational Education (MBO) opportunities on St. Maarten.
The two ministers also discussed an exemption on turnover tax for goods being shipped to Saba and St. Eustatius before Shigemoto briefed Donner on the International Monetary Fund’s Article IV consultation, the current account deficit and the monetary union between Curacao and St. Maarten.
