Seven year old accidentally kills younger sister

St. Maarten – 33-year-old N.S was arrested over the weekend for negligent homicide after his seven year old son – R.S. – accidentally shot his three year old sister – Anjali Singh – on Saturday with a flare gun he’d brought home. The three year old died in hospital on Saturday night, because of her injuries.

Public Prosecutor Hans Mos confirmed that the man worked in the marine industry and was allowed to have the flare gun on board the boat he works on so he could send up a signal if the boat was in distress at night. He confirmed that the man will be charged with negligent homicide when the matter comes to court and that carries a prison time of two years. An initial idea to also charge the man with firearm possession has been abandoned because the law allows him to carry the flare gun, based on his profession.

“When we look at this, there is no crime under the firearms act so we could not keep him. We also looked at the fact that this is a family tragedy and that this family is closely related to the family of the man who was recently shot in Back Street – Mark Deygoo – so we thought we should let him go home and grieve with his family. In the meantime we will continue our investigation but once this has settled we will proceed with the matter,” Mos said.
