St. Maarten – The more than 200 members of the Sint Maarten Seniors and Pensioners Association will commemorate the International Day of Older Persons today for the third time since the association was established in July 2010.

Yesterday SMSPA-seniors joined in a thanksgiving church service at the Methodist Church on the invitation of the Home Away from Home Foundation.

This morning, starting at 10 a.m. SMSPA-members will join seniors from the Home Away from Home Foundation, the St. Maarten Home, the Hope Estate senior citizens recreational center, and French-side seniors at the Emilio Wilson Park to observe the contributions they have made to society.

On Wednesday morning there is a conference at the John Larmonie Center from 10 a.m. until noon with speakers from the SMSPA and the local anti-poverty platform. Social development Minister Cornelius de Weever will join the speakers in a panel to discuss the challenges seniors are facing.

After the conference seniors are invited to a lunch sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce.

Board members will also be on the radio this week. Today, they are with talk show host Lloyd Richardson from 12.00 p.m. until 1.00 p.m. on PJD 2 and on Wednesday morning from 8 a.m. until 9.30 a.m. they are with “Lady Electra” Mercedes Wyat on Laser 101. Topics of discussion are amongst others equal rights for seniors in the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
