St. Maarten – Education Minister Silveria Jacobs gave orders for the maintenance of public schools last Wednesday to the Minister of Vromi. “I am more than relieved that much needed repairs on several schools will begin soon,” the minister stated in a press release. The architectural sketch of a second floor for the John Larmonie Center is in the process of finalizing by the Department of New Projects.

“The facility will be able to house more preforming arts practices as well as a small theatre for performances,” Jacobs said. The educational summit “Turning Challenges Into Stepping Stones” completed on November 13, targeted teachers, caregivers and managers from elementary and secondary schools across the island. Minister Jacobs said that its findings had been compiled and within this week meetings with division heads will be held to determine which priority areas will be the first to tackle. “This is to synchronize the activities of the ministry and include as much as possible the wishes and needs of those we serve,” she added.

The Minister announced that a steering committee for the new SBO School in Cayhill will be appointed. The committee is busy setting up an organizational structure and a school board. Jacobs added that the construction of the school is scheduled for the end of December. However the construction of kitchen and hotel simulation classrooms, were not part of the original design. These additions will be financed by the Dutch Development Funds.
