St. Maarten -Scholarships for the teacher education program are currently available under the Ministry of Education, Culture Youth and Sports Affairs. Candidates are being asked to check at the education minister’s office to see if they qualify for it.
Education Minister Silveria Jacobs said last Wednesday that efforts are being made to have the program fully accredited by the Dutch accreditation organization NVAO.
NVAO is the independent and bi-national accreditation organization set up by the Dutch and Flemish governments, whose primary goal it is to provide an expert and objective judgment of the quality of higher education in Flanders and the Netherlands.
Five education-related minor programs including special education, math and science teacher certification will also be accredited.
“St.Maarten does need teachers and some space is still available,” the minister said.
She added that her ministry’s Secretary General Claudette Forsythe-Labega will retire in November after 35 years of service. Forsythe-Labega will go on vacation before. In the interim, she will be replaced by Quincy Harrigan until Sidonia Lacorbiniere-Hodge is appointed as official head of the department of education.
“On behalf of the management and staff of the ministry, I would like to extend our best wishes to her for service and thank her for years of distinguished service especially in education,” the minister said of Forsythe-Labega.
