St. Maarten – Merlyn Schaminee-Miguel took the reins of the St. Maarten Lions Club from outgoing President Lisandra Havertong at a recent Changing of the Board ceremony at Saratoga Restaurant at the Simpson Bay Yacht Club. Havertong thanked all the Lions for their valuable and unswerving service and gave an extensive overview of the many community projects which were executed during the Lions Year 2010-2011.
“The many projects have truly given substance to her theme for the year “Empowering the Youth”,” Havertong said before thanking the many businesses, organizations and the public at large for their contributions and support throughout the year.

Schaminee-Miguel sees her year as president as a continuation of placing the attention on the youths of St. Maarten and has chosen the theme “BREAK THE CYCLE”. She wants to use the year and theme to place particular focus on bringing youths lost to crime and violence back on the right track through workshops for youths as well as parents. She also wants youth and parents to be involved with radio, television and print media ads and talk shows so they can “make a positive contribution to developing a better society.”

The other members of the board are the 1st Vice President Richard Boyd, the 2nd Vice President Michael van Grieken, the 3rd Vice President Jessica Vrolijk, the Secretary Khalil Revan, the Treasurer Carl Thomas, Lion Tamer Edelmiro Jansen and the Directors Chantal Schaminee, Rafael Boasman, Richard Gibson Jr. and Sunil Khatnani. Wally Havertong, a past District Governor, will be the Membership Director this year.
