St. Maarten –Parliament President Drs. Rodolphe Samuel expressed his heartfelt condolences on behalf of himself, his family and the parliament in a press statement issued last night to the family and friends of murder victims Michael and Thelma King.

President Samuel commended the special police task force that was established to investigate the crime, for its success in making an arrest.

Samuel added that tourism is the main pillar of the island’s economy. “Crime can have a negative impact on the industry,” he said, adding that he is confident that the quick apprehension of a suspect will limit the long-term effects.

“The quick apprehension of a suspect,” Samuel pointed out, “is an indication that law enforcement of Sint Maarten is doing a good job. We all hope that this terrible crime doesn’t have a long term effect on our economy.”

Samuel said that crime against residents and visitors cannot be tolerated. He called on the community to continue to be vigilant in their neighbourhoods, and to report criminal activity to law enforcement.

Samuel said that the nation “is keeping the King family in its thoughts and prayers during this very difficult period as we mourn this tragedy together.”
