Samantha Theodore wins police song festival

GREAT BAY- Just one year after joining the ranks of the local police force extraordinary police officer Samantha Theodore was not elevated in rank but to a different status: she won the police song festival at Port De Plaisance on Saturday night.
It was the perfect opportunity for the officers who spend most of their time protecting and serving the public to show their softer sides. After some introductory remarks from Turhan, ‘Pico’ Simmons, the President of the Police Sports Association and the observance of a moment of silence for the late Gilmore Romney, there was never a dull moment for the rest of the entertaining evening.
The Logic Band provided the music for the seven participants who were judged on melody, compatibility, song structure & coherence, organization, clarity, intonation, mood, adherence, body language, use of stage , attire, use of props, creativity and interpretation.
Doing a song made popular by the late Michael Jackson, entitled, ‘I’ll Be There’, Theodore used her melodious voice aided by two female backup singers and secured the nod of approval from the six member panel of judges and was awarded 377 points.
The second runner up position went to Constable Rumini Rogers who is no stranger to the stage and received 360 points for his presentation of ‘I Believe I Can Fly’ by R Kelly and the finishing in the first runner up spot was George York. York a Police Inspector with the Internal Affairs Department was able to serenade the mature section of the audience with ‘My Way’ by Frank Sinatra and picked up 371 points for his effort.
The main purpose of the preliminary festival which was organized by the Police Sports Association was to select the top three that will represent St Maarten in the annual Police Song Festival on October 13 when local officers will go up against their counterparts from other islands.
Theodore won a cruise for two values at $1,500; she will have to pick up her voucher from Intermar Travel, York was the winner of two airline tickets to any Insel Air destination and Rogers won himself a weekend stay for two at the Westin Hotel.
