Embracing St. Maarten’s tradition

St. Maarten – Embracing St. Maarten’s tradition. That’s what the royal visitors did last night when they attended an evening of dance, song and poetry on Clem Labega Square, marking the conclusion of their visit to our island.
Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams welcomed H.M. Queen Beatrix, prince Willem-Alexander and princess Maxima, Kingdom relations Minister Piet Hein Donner, Governor Holiday and his wife and other dignitaries.
“The past year has been hectic but we have made some significant achievements. Step by step we are working our way towards sustainable development,” the Prime Minister said. She referred to the upcoming expansion of the medical center, the progress in compulsory education, the drive to diminish the number of undocumented residents on the island, the infrastructural upgrades on main roads and in the districts, and the study into alternative energy.
“Challenges remain and there is still much to be done, while our resources are scarce,” Wescot-Williams said. “We appreciate that Your Majesty and Your Royal Highnesses are taking an interest in all citizens in the Kingdom. Going forward we will stumble, but we will stand again. Please enjoy the hospitality and the warmth of our people.”
