St. Maarten – What started out as a highly anticipated queen pageant where six girls were vying for the coveted title in the Miss Semana Dominicana  turned out into a near fiasco seconds after the incoming queen, Ordis Supulveda was crowned by Wanda Flores, the outgoing queen last Saturday at the Cultural Center in Philipsburg.

Sepulveda, a student of the St Maarten Academy PSVE,  was also the winner of the talent segment, best evening wear, best introduction, Miss Amity and Miss Photogenic clearly stood out above the rest on points and the judges agreed, however, that decision did not go down too well among a section of the audience who launched verbal attacks on the panel of judges.

The Miss Popularity title went to Nicole Duinkerk,  a student of the Prince Willem Alexander School, the 3rd runner up sash went to contestant #1, Zulma Vlaun and the second runner up sash went to contestant #2, Georgina Rivera.

Ironically, while Supulveda was getting hugs and kisses from four of the six contestants and posing for pictures, the dissatisfied lot became more infuriated and the judges had to quickly vacate the head table and sought shelter behind the stage.

It was later learnt that the police had to be called in but it could not be substantiated if any arrests were made or the extent and cause of the misunderstandings. The pageant which enabled girls between the ages of 14 and 17 to participate was divided into segments.

An introduction, a talent and an evening wear segment in which between one to10 points was awarded for each segment and the decision of the judges is always final.
