St. Maarten – In an effort to elevate the level of various sports on the island, the Rotary Club of Sint Maarten-Mid Isle embarked on the Rotary Youth Soccer Competition (RYSC). For the past 5 years, the Rotary Club has been hosting a table tennis tournament, and has decided to try and do the same for various other youth sports. In close cooperation with the St. Maarten Soccer Association (SMSA), the RYSC will cater to primary school children ages 9 to 11 years. Nine schools are taking part in the competition which will be taking place at the Raoul Illidge Sports Complex. The competition was supposed to start last Saturday, but due to bad weather, it has been postponed to this Saturday. The opening ceremonies will begin at 8:00 am. The participating schools are Leonard Conner, St. Dominic Primary, Sr. Marie Laurence, Learning Unlimited, Oranje School, Sr. Magda (A & B teams), Caribbean International Academy and Hillside Christian Schools.
Last week Thursday, Rotary Mid Isle president Jon Hart presented the schools with their colored team shirts during an information meeting which was held by the SMSA President Owen Nicky. The production of the team shirts were made possible through the support of Archyon Integrated Solutions, Elle Si Belle, Liccom, Nagico, Kwik Bargains, Payless Electric, Tony’s Air Conditioning, Helena Jewelers and St. Maarten Laboratory Services.
On the last day of the competition there will be a knock out tournament, after which the trophies for first, second, third and fourth place winners will be handed out, along with an award for the most disciplined team.
