MARIGOT, St. Martin -Roderick Halley and Maria Chemont received their cultural identification cards for their contributions as St. Martiners to the community by the coordinator of the St. Martin Nation Building Jollification Committee Leopold James in Friar’s Bay on Sunday afternoon. The activities got underway at Mango Eco farm in the early afternoon with a number of speakers giving their views on the reason for the jollification since there is need for the local people to take their rightful place in the society.
The initiative for the event was seen as a search for a natural solution to preserve the native heritage and culture of the indigenous St. Martin people. Historian Daniella Jeffry said that there was need to write the history of St. Martin as it unfolds and called on the young St. Martiners to be vigilant.
In a previous interview, James was quoted as saying that “St. Martin is under serious threat from many angles as is in danger of serious collapse” a thought that was reiterated again on Sunday. The jollification is expected to continue once a month and there are plans to invite all “St. Martin patriots and St. Martiners at heart to collectively rebuild St. Martin so that it would serve as a refuge for all her children.”
