Road closures in Philipsburg, St. Maarten begin Friday

POSTED: 12/22/11 3:49 PM

St. Maarten – Stretches of Front Street and Back Street will be closed to vehicular traffic as of December 23 to accommodate cruise passengers as well as visiting and local shoppers. Taxis and busses will have limited access during the closure but motorcycles, scooters and bicycles will not be allowed.

The two streets will close between 10:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. every day until the end of the holiday season. Front Street will be closed from Sea Palace to Emmaplein and Back Street will be closed from Emmaplein to School Steeg (Oranje School Alley). All alleys between Front Street and Back street that are in the closed areas will also be closed to vehicular traffic using guard rails.

Taxis will have access to Front Street and Back Street so they can drop off and pick up passengers. Four taxis at a time will be able to park at the taxi stand in front of the Court House and another two will be allowed to park next to Angelo’s Boutique on Back Street. All other taxis will have to wait at the holding area on Clem Labega Square.

Five busses at a time will be able to circulate on Back Street to pick up passengers. Drop offs must be done on other streets.

People who are making deliveries will have to notify the police ahead of time. If they cannot prove that they have done so they will be turned away. Deliveries made between 10:01 p.m. and 9:59 a.m. will not be hindered.

The police have recommended that people use the public parking lots – Pond Island and Clem Labega Square – and the Ring Road as parking as there will be zero tolerance for illegal parking.

“Any vehicle that is illegally parked will be towed at the cost of the owner/drive,” a statement from Police Spokesman Inspector Ricardo Henson stated.

Later he’d add in a more general comment, “These traffic measures may be subject to change based on the situation as it unfolds.”
