St. Maarten – Project Director for Constitutional Affairs and Interim Executive Director of the Social and Health Insurances (SZV) Dennis Richardson (64) has officially been appointed Member of the Kingdom Council of State. The decision to appoint him was taken in Friday’s meeting of the Kingdom Council of Ministers based on a proposal by Minister of Home Affairs and Kingdom Relations Piet Hein Donner.

It will be several more months before Richardson takes up the post as the decision has to be signed by Queen Beatrix, arrangements made for his swearing in by Her Majesty the Queen and for him to complete his move to the Netherlands.

“I must say I am truly honored and I consider this a crown on my career,” Richardson said.

Once he’s sworn in, Richardson – a former Lt. Governor and Managing Director at Telem – will join the members from the other parts of the Kingdom – Aruba, Curacao and the Netherlands – in rendering advice on laws, treaties and decisions that will have an effect on them. Even though he’s not necessarily a lobbyist for the island and his appointment is independent of the government Richardson believes his presence will have added value for the island.

“One of the reasons members are selected are so they can provide better insight into what is happening in a particular part of the Kingdom and I think if I am able to elucidate on and clarify issues from the St. Maarten perspective then that only contributes to a better understanding and a higher quality of advice,” Richardson said.

Richardson will maintain his function as an extraordinary member of the Council of Advice, but will leave his other posts here. He’s committed though to assisting the island where and how he can, especially in terms of the functioning of the Council of Advice.

“The Kingdom Council of State can help to deliver assistance in the area of especially the review of legislation and if there’s any more help needed I can be a conduit for securing that assistance. An example of this is Mr. (Gilbert) Wawoe, who was the member from the Netherlands Antilles and we’ve seen how he was able to assist the Antilles during his tenure,” Richardson said.
