Reader’s opinion: Election Campaign Promises

Dear Editor,

I have lived here for over 30 years. I raised my children here and this is my home. I have never written to you before but the time has come to speak up. I am sure we are all tired of hearing the same campaign promises. As I listen to what the politicians are saying, I ask myself if I have heard these words before and if so, have they carried out any of their campaign promises.

When I sit down and think about it, the only person who has lived up to any of his promises in recent times is Theo Heyliger.

In my opinion and that of others I have spoken to, he has been the only one with a vision of tomorrow – of what St. Maarten should be and will need 10, 20 years from now. What St. Maarten should be like for our children and grandchildren. He and his team have been the only ones to follow through and complete so many wonderful projects on the island – the harbor, the boardwalk, the Simpson Bay bridge, just to name a few. Not just for the tourists but for us as well.

Since Maurice Lake took over as minister the roads have never been in such good shape. The potholes are filled whenever needed, the water and sewerage is not running anywhere like it used to. Building codes are being upheld. All I can say is listen to each politician speak and then try to remember what he or she has said in the past and if their words were true. Actions speak louder than words.
