St. Maarten – H.M. Queen Beatrix became the eldest governing monarch in Dutch history today. She is now 73 years and 277 days, the same age as the previous record holder, King William III who passed away in 1890 on November 23. The King had been ill for quite some time before his death.
The Queen’s mother, Juliana, abdicated in 1980 at the age of 70 after almost 32 years in function. On April 30 of next year Queen Beatrix will have been 32 years in function.
Among ruling European monarchs, Queen Beatrix has one queen and three kings ahead of her in terms of age. Great-Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II is 85, King Albert (Belgium) 77, King Harald (Norway) 74, and King Juan Carlos (Spain), 73.
Juan Carlos is 26 days older. He was born on January 5, 1938, while Queen Beatrix was born that same year on January 31.
