St. Maarten -The initiative taken by the Voice of Our Children (VOOC) to distribute anti-bullying bumper stickers over the weekend was described as a resounding success by the foundation’s President, Sharmaine Olivacce.
“The public was very responsive to this event; we had persons who asked us for posters to put in the schools. We will work on this request as well,” Olivacce said.
More than six hundred bumper stickers marked “Stop the Bullying, Stop the Violence” were given to people who were in the vicinity of the Le Grand Marché Shopping Centre parking lot on Saturday. The stickers were produced by the foundation with help from Nagico Insurances.
The anti-bullying campaign began around 1:00 pm and concluded at 4:00 pm. During this period members of the public were also willing to share their sentiments on bullying and what can be done to protect children, in particular, from its harmful effects.
“Bullying is the behavior that threatens to harm another person verbally or physically and may be directed repeatedly towards victims. Bullying is a behavior particularly recognized in schools,” the VOOC said.
The foundation is calling on the community and its leaders to take part in creating more awareness to stop bullying as the consequences thereof could lead to emotional distress to the victims which may hinder social development, withdrawal and even lead to suicidal tendencies.
