St. Maarten – An agreement between the office of the public prosecutor and the tax office to strengthen administrative co-operation in the field of taxation was signed by Attorney-General Dick Piar, Chief Public Prosecutor Geert Beergsma, acting head of Fiscal Affairs Sissy Gonzalez-Fung and the head of the tax administration Geert Bergsma on February 1. The agreement will contribute to the prevention and effective combating of tax fraud through co-operation and the exchange of information that is relevant to the determination, assessment and collection of taxes, the recovery and enforcement of tax claims and the investigation or prosecution of tax matters.

The agreement will lead to regular meetings and the drafting of a policy plan that contains the priorities for investigating and prosecuting tax fraud cases. Finance Minister Hiro Shigemoto wants the strengthened co-operation between the different organizations to lead to better enforcement of the tax laws. He also considers this agreement a prerequisite to further improving tax compliance.
