Police Sports Week opens with color and fanfare

The Soualiga Brass Band leads the procession of officers along the LB Scot Road from Le Grand Marche to the John Cooper/Jose Lake Ballpark Sr.

St. Maarten – The visiting police officers that participate in the 62nd annual Police Sports Week certainly made their presence felt during a parade from the parking lot at Le Grand Marché to the John Cooper/Jose Lake Ballpark Sr where the week of activities was officially opened.
Attired in their respective softball uniforms and marching to the music from the Soualiga Brass Band, the delegation from Aruba led the way followed by Curacao, a small contingent of Coast Guards from St Maarten, the Netherlands, Suriname and the hosts, St Maarten.
After arriving at the ball field, the national anthems of the participating countries were played and after some welcome remarks in Dutch by Chief Commissioner, Peter De Witte, Education, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Silvera Jacobs also had some encouraging words to say.
“I must say congratulations to the various police forces as they celebrate the sports week. I hope that this will be a friendly tournament with good competition, but may the best team wins,” Jacobs said during her short address.
Minister of Justice, Roland Duncan in his short speech extended a warm welcome to the various delegations on behalf of the local police force. “May you have a fruitful week of competition please enjoy our island.” Minister Duncan also lauded the efforts of the Police Sports Organization who did laid the ground work for the staging of the annual event.
At the conclusion of the formal part of the ceremony which had to be cut short due to the late start, Minister Jacobs, an ardent sporting fan was invited to throw the first ball to Minister Duncan who was forced to dive low and hard to his left from Jacobs, a leftie.
Beginning last evening, the various teams began the series of matches in the Softball competition, the finals will take place on Saturday.
