St. Maarten – The Special Robbery Unit and Forensic Department of the police spent the weekend dealing with a spate of armed robberies and may have come close to solving one that occurred on Saturday night, during a high speed chase on Monday afternoon. The police believe that at least one of the three men in the car they chased. All three evaded capture.
According to the police report a man dressed in dark clothing and wielding a machete approached C.B., an American tourist, around 9:30 p.m. on March 12. The attack, which was part of a robbery attempt, took place on an open lot across from Pineapple Pete that people use for parking. It left the victim with “serious wounds” to his thighs and left palms, which were treated by parademics before he was transported to the St. Maarten Medical Center for further treatment. The robbing attacker was not able to take any of the American’s possession and fled in the car that police chased Monday.
Earlier on Saturday night – around 9:05 p.m. – a man in dark clothing, who was brandishing a gun, walked on the forecourt of the Shell Gas Station on L.B. Scot Road. He pointed the weapon at D.H. – the gas pump attendant – and that caused the man to flee into the mini-mart attached to the gas station. Considering his attempt a failure the robber decided to flee.
The police are also investigating a daylight robbery that took place at 1:00 p.m. on Friday in the parking lot across from the new Government Administration Building on the Soauliga Rd. The victim M.O.J told police an unknown man jumped her from behind and stole her gold necklace. She gave police a full description.
Last Thursday’s robbery on Welfare Road is also being investigated. The victims A.C. and O.P told police that three unknown young men in dark clothing approached them in their garage and robbed them on their wallets, cash, identification cards, driver’s licenses and cellular phones. Two of the suspects were armed. One had a sawed off shot gun and the other had a machete.
