Police arrest two Vesuvius-suspects after Bada Bing-fight court hearing

POSTED: 02/2/12 2:32 PM

St. Maarten – Jannitro Denzel Williams, 20, and Joey Sjurendy Rohan, 21 thought they got off light when Judge mr. Monique Keppels sentenced them to a 4-month conditional prison sentence for a fight in Bada Bing on February 3 of last year. But when they left the courthouse police officers and RST-detectives were out in force to arrest them on the spot. While the exact circumstances are unclear, it is likely that the two were arrested as suspects in the Vesuvius-investigation.
mr. Brenda Brooks, the attorney for the two young men, said that she had expected the action because of the friendship they entertain with one of the suspects in the Vesuvius-investigation, Erno L. Jr. “They have either been picked up as suspects or as witnesses,” she told this newspaper yesterday afternoon.
mr. Brooks, who is also the attorney of one of the Vesuvius-suspects, said that the public prosecutor’s office is under pressure, because the first pro forma court hearing is scheduled for next week Wednesday.
“They will be able to detain them for six hours. Then they have to go to the Judge of Instruction. But I expect that they will be free again within the six hours.”

Prosecutor mr. Bart den Hartigh confirmed the arrests and said that Williams and Rohan are indeed suspects. “At the moment I cannot say what exactly they are suspected of,” the prosecutor said.
The Vesuvius-investigation focuses on a series of drugs-related murders that occurred last year. The murders probably have to do with a power struggle between gangs over control of the local drugs market. Among the victims are Hector Miguel and Rodolfo Arrindell, Amador Jones and Sheldon Thomas

Williams and Rohan stood trial yesterday afternoon together with Edwin Mario York, 31, for a fight in Bada Bing on February 3 of last year. The men had beaten a man who had harassed the girlfriend of Erno L. Jr., one of the suspects in the Vesuvius-investigation who is currently in custody. The court found the three defendants guilty and sentenced them to a 4-month conditional prison sentence. They also have to pay $200 each in damages to the victim.
