POSTED: 01/21/13 12:53 PM

St. Maarten – Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams met with Dutch justice experts Professor Paul Vegter and Juan de Lange for talks about progress with the improvements at the Pointe Blanche prison and the police cells. Vegter and de Lange followed up on the 2011 report of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT).

This committee assesses how people are treated at prisons, juvenile detention centers, police stations, holding centers for immigration detainees, psychiatric hospitals and social care homes.
Vegter and De Lange were appointed by the governors of Aruba and the Netherlands Antilles in 2008, following a critical CPT-report about local prisons.
The CPT will send a detailed report to St. Maarten with its findings, recommendations, comments and requests for additional information.
