St. Maarten – A group that calls itself Voice of St. Maarten has started a petition on thepetitionsite.com that supports the decision by the Gumbs cabinet to invoke article 59 of the constitution, to dissolve the parliament and to call new elections. Up to last night, the petition had 54 signatures, while it aims to reach the 10,000 mark. The petition drive started on Thursday night at 10 p.m.
“We, the people of Sint Maarten, support the Prime Minister’s decision to utilize article 59 of the country’s constitution, which gives the Council of Ministers the right to dissolve the Parliament of St. Maarten and call for new elections.
We, the people of Sint Maarten, are fed up with the current, unstable government and have no confidence in a new coalition that consists of the same unreliable and ineffective players,” the text of the petition reads.
Among the signatories are Ricardo Perez, Emilio Kalmera, Binkie van Es, Suzanne Koelega, Paul Dijkkhoffz, Nina Bijnsdorp and even somebody from Sri Lanka. Quite some signatories prefer not to have their name displayed on the petition web site.
