GREAT BAY- There was no question about it, from the time Desmond Patterson stepped onto the stage at the Philipsburg Cultural Center, his well defined physique stood out tremendously and it did not take the judges long to arrive at a decision at the end of the night to give him the nod in the heavy/super heavy weight bodybuilding category.
The annual bodybuilding, fitness and bikini competition which was organized by the St Maarten Body Building & Fitness Association was to select the top athletes from the respective weight categories to represent St Maarten at the CAC Games in Puerto Rico.
Patterson, who made his first appearance on stage on St Maarten in 1997 and again in 1998, went into an 11 year hiatus, but as an extremely disciplined person. He still managed to maintain his physique over those years and settled for observer status role during the local competitions.
But old habits die hard and in 2011, he returned and secured a place on the podium during a competition on the French side of the island. Realizing he had to make the necessary adjustments, Patterson rebounded with a first place in the Allison Classic that same year.
“For the first year, it was hard for me getting back into the sport and now I am ready for Puerto Rico,” he said. According to Patterson, during the show last Friday, he tipped the scale at 220 pounds, but wants to drop a few pounds.
“I have to work on my diet, I need to be more lean and dry for more definition, anything in the vicinity of 215 to 217 will be ok for me.” He concluded. Occupying the number two spot behind Patterson was Charles Peterson followed by Elias Jones in third.
In the light middle weight category, Emmanuel ‘Mano’ Richardson showed that he still had class when he clinched the top spot ahead of Auerilio Huyghues in the second place followed by Garvey Courtar.
Maudienne Profas, the lone participant in the women’s bodybuilding category was an automatic qualifier and so was Cleo Carti in the Body Fitness category. However, in the bikini competition, Erica Fortuno literally struck gold in her epic performance on stage and it’s clear that she will be a force to reckon with in years to come. As an added attraction, there were several demonstrations and they included drumming, boxing, kick boxing and Jui Jitsu.
