GREAT BAY, St. Maarten – Specific aspects of the draft Sports Policy will be up for discussion on Saturday during part two of the Sports Conference that was initiated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport. The half day event will run from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and is a continuation of the discussions that began on September 4.

“It is important that everyone who has a contribution to make attend this conference. Please consider this an open and personal invitation. Let us together design a Sports Policy that is befitting for our island,” Arrindell said.

The Minister also announced on Wednesday that the potential areas of cooperation put forward by the St. Martin Sports Federation and the National Olympic Committee in their meetings with the delegation from Santiago de Cuba last week will be examined in the drafting of a framework document that will lead to a cooperation agreement.  The requested areas are training of coaches, technical assistance in training athletes, getting Physical Education teachers and sports exchanges that could also include secondary school students.

The delegation also met with education officials, the board and management of University of St. Martin, Public School managers, and had face-to-face exchange with students of the St. Dominic High School. They reported that they are very impressed with the island and the enthusiasm and interest that everyone they met with showed.

A cooperation framework based on the delegation’s findings will now be drawn up. This will lead to negotiations between the relevant ministries in Cuba and St. Maarten with an eye to crafting a mutually beneficial cooperation agreement.
