St. Maarten – The representative of the Netherlands in Sint Maarten Gert Versluis, handed over a bundle of registration forms for the elections for the European Parliament to Parliament President drs. GracitaArrindell. The elections are scheduled for May 22, and registration for voters in St. Maarten closes on April 10.

According to Arrindell and Versluis, many people seem not to be aware of their right to vote for the upcoming European Parliament elections. “All inhabitants of Sint Maarten older than 18 with the Dutch nationality can claim that right by registering at the Dutch Representation.”

The office is located on the first floor of the convent Building, Front Street 26. Gracita Arrindell was one of the first citizens to register for the elections and she wants to actively draw the attention of the Members of Parliament and all other potential voters who are eligible to participate in these elections.

Those who want to vote should register at the Office of the Dutch Representation before April 10. The registration forms are available at the office, but they can also be downloaded from www.stemmenvanuithetbuitenland.nl.

As soon as the voting forms are available, the Office of the Dutch Representation will invite registered voters by email to pick up the forms or have them sent to their home address. People can fill in their voting form and deliver it in a sealed envelope to the Representation’s Office on the day of the elections, May 22. The polls close at 3 p.m. local time.

“I have always used my right to vote as a student-resident of the Netherlands,” Gracita Arrindell said. “I certainly make use of my duty to vote as a citizen of Country Sint Maarten. I take this opportunity to remind the eligible voting population in general to remember the struggles and frustration of countries, in the past and present, where people cannot or are not allowed to exercise the right to cast a secret ballot. Let us not take this democratic right for granted.”
