St. Maarten – Minister of Tourism and Economic Affairs Romeo Pantophlet refuted claims by Democratic Party Parliamentarian Petrus Leroy de Weever that 24 new stores were to be established at the harbor soon. De Weever, on Tuesday contended that he had received accurate information that 24 new stores would be set up on the harbor and indicated that as coalition partner he was miffed that he was not privy to this information prior to it being revealed to him on Tuesday. He passionately defended businesses in Philipsburg, whom he said, would continue to suffer, if all of the commercial activity that cruise passengers partake in, is limited to the harbor.

Minister Pantophlet dismissed the claims, saying “there is no such thing as 24 stores.” He clarified that 1000 square meters had been designated for 6 stores only. Minister Pantophlet holds the portfolio of shareholder representative of the St. Maarten Harbour Group of Companies.

The Ministry and the harbor are currently working on activities to stimulate more business activity in Philipsburg.
