St. Maarten -Huge discrepancies between the figures that the government and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry have for businesses on the island, need to be resolved soon, Economic Affairs Minister Romeo Pantophlet says. While the Ministry and Tax Department records 6000 odd businesses on the island, the Chamber has more than 21,000 on file. The minister said that the discrepancy has arisen because the Chamber has failed to update its system. He indicated that even while head of the Central Bureau of Statistics, he constantly asked the Chamber to update its registry.

He said for years the Chamber has had to update its system and to date the same response is given; “it will be done.”

“If you ask me they have a lot of work to be done,” the minister said.

Laying the blame for the huge discrepancy squarely at the Chamber’s door, the minister explained that the Chamber’s registry contains many companies have been liquidated, some are foundations and others have gone bankrupt.

The minister was at the time responding to questions posed during the 2013 Draft Budget Debate at the House of Parliament.
