Pantophlet allows three more lottery licenses

POSTED: 01/4/13 1:31 PM

St. Maarten – Economic Affairs Minister Romeo Pantophlet has lifted the moratorium on lottery-businesses that was in place since October 2005. Currently there are four license holders for such businesses; the ministry will now allow three additional players onto this market, on a first come, first serve basis.

Globally as well as on the island of St. Maarten,” the ministry writes in its motivation to lift the moratorium. “Lotteries are popular forms of entertainment on St. Maarten and provide economic opportunities in the form of jobs and government revenues.”

Minister Pantophlet signed the policy on December 4 of last year; the moratorium was lifted on that day, but the public announcement on the government information page in the local media appeared yesterday for the first time.
