Opinion: Question for the Prime Minister

POSTED: 06/16/14 11:00 PM

Dear editor,

I have a question for the Prime Minister of Country St. Maarten. Madame Prime Minister can you tell me why no cost of living adjustment for the year 2012 was paid out to pensioners who are members of the General Pension Fund of St. Maarten (APS)?

This cola was paid out by government to all the others who were entitled to it, except pensioners from APS. Recently I have read in the newspapers that government has decided to adjust the social aid to recipients based on the cost of living increase. And the question again is why not the APS pensioners? What is so difficult about it? Is there something called good governance? Is equal treatment part of good governance? Is this government of St. Maarten allowed to discriminate? Are APS-pensioners not deserving of equal treatment?

Madame Prime Minister do what is just, give the green light to the management of APS and allow the APS-pensioners to collect their cola.

Todd Peterson
