How about playing cards for three days straight and going home with something like $18.3 million? That’s what just happened to Antonio Esfandiari, a Iranian-American professional poker player who won the Big One for One Drop charity tournament in Las Vegas.
The buy-in – the amount of money players had to pony up to enter the tournament – was an astonishing $1 million. We don’t know how much of his action Esfandiari sold to backers, but that is a matter of minor importance. The Internal Revenue Service – the American tax inspectorate – did not play a single hand in the tournament, but it will grab a firm slice of Esfandiari’s winnings.
The winner, nicknamed The Magician because that’s how he started making money in States, probably could not care less, because after Uncle Sam has taken his share there will be plenty of money left for him. To do what? Play poker of course.
