Opinion: Naked fishermen

Twelve Dutch professional fishermen downed all their clothing for a calendar designed for fishermen’s wives who are sitting home alone when their husbands are at sea. The calendar will be distributed for free on Valentine’s Day, February 14, Sarah Verroen, one of the project’s initiators, told the Volkskrant.

Some fishermen have their ships full of naked women. This calendar will give their wives something to look at as well, Verroen says.

The calendar’s size fits exactly under a standard sized pillow.

The idea for the calendar actually comes from the fishermen who used twitter to exchange ideas about it. The twelve fishermen in the calendar are from Zoutkamp, Urk, Den Oever, Zierikzee, Katwijk and Oudeschild. During the past years they were all photographed naked or almost naked.

The initiative is remarkable, because Dutch fishermen’s villages are traditionally very religious. The calendar could inspire others who are often far from home – like local politicians who travel to Parlatino meetings – to come up with similar projects. The calendar in itself is not unique:

the French side association I love my island dog has brought out two calendars in the past years with near nude women and men to raise funds for the animal shelter in Mount Vernon.
