Several church leaders in the Balkan claim that the recent floods in the region have been caused by Conchita Wurst, the bearded female winner of the European Song festival.
Dozens of people died in the floods in Bosnia and Serbia. Tens of thousands had to flee their homes. The Archbishop of Montenegro, Amfilohije, says it’s all Conchita’s fault.
In an interview with the Serbian TV-channel Nova he says that the rainfall shows that people should not accept Wurst. He describes the Song festival winner as “a Jesus-like figure.” It is unclear, the Volskrant reports, whether the bishop links Wurst directly to Jesus or that he was more referring to the adoration for Conchita.
Conchita Wurst, birth name Thomas Neuwirth, caused controversy by taking part in the European Song festival for Austria as a woman – with a beard. Her powerful song Rise Like a Phoenix was good enough to leave the Dutch Common Linnets behind in second place with the country song Calm After the Storm.
Serbia was one of the countries that gave points to Conchita. The archbishop of Serbia says that the heavy rainfall is a warning for Serbia because the country is also in the process of organizing its first Gay Pride Parade. “God sent the floods as godly punishment for their sins,” archbishop Irinej said.
Earlier the Russian Orthodox Church expressed its disdain for the Song festival winner, saying that Europe had distanced itself from the Christian identity by voting for Conchita.
This way, the Song festival has become a litmus test for tolerance. What a pity St. Maarten had no vote in this event – we could have learned something.
