MARIGOT—The open ship day on board the Sail Training Vessel Danmark in Galisbay Port de Marigot St. Martin is being billed as a huge success by organizers. The event was held on Saturday. With 671 visitors from 2.00 pm until 5.00 pm and around 70 more during the private reception afterwards, all concerned parties were satisfied.
Spectators enjoyed touring the full rigged square sail training vessel with a friendly crew guiding the tours. The Danmark is a member vessel of the foundation Caribbean Sail Training and made a short 3-day stop in St. Martin before leaving again towards the Azores and further on to Denmark. The port of Marigot director Alberic Ellis was honored during the reception (which was co-sponsored by International Liquors and Tobacco Trading and the Maritime School of the West Indies) for his and the port staff’s cooperation with CST to wave member vessels port fees and more.
A CST Most Friendly Port in the Caribbean award was presented to Alberic Ellis by the foundation’s president Jan Roosens at the reception which many invited guests, VIP’s and press attended. The vessel’s food and beverage manager, galley chef and staff provided finger food and a snack buffet that was reportedly so impressive an invited mega yacht captain inquired about the possibilities of hiring the chef on his yacht. The Danmark is now sailing again to their home country and is expected to visit Rio De Janeiro next year for the Olympic games. Some 35 other sail training vessels visited the Caribbean over the past season and Caribbean Sail Training is expecting even more ships next season.
May of those will again have Caribbean youngsters on board to give one, two or more weeks sail training sponsored by the foundation. For more information, schedules, Tall Ship regatta participation and more see www.CaribbeanSailTraining.com or the Caribbean Sail Training face book page.
