One suspect in custody for apparent robbery attempt

St. Maarten – One man is currently detained for questioning by the police about what could have been the second robbery on Front Street within a week, after last week Friday’s robbery at the Helena Jewelry Store. Two potential accomplices remain at large.

According to an eye witness, a green car with heavy tint and no number plate was seen proceeding along Front Street yesterday morning. A security-conscious passerby noticed that the lone occupant was acting in a suspicious manner and alerted the police.

The driver of the car was not alone. Two men on scooters were also seen navigating the road around the Courthouse. However, when they realized that their timing was bad and the police were notified, they quickly made their escape while the bicycle patrol prepared to surround the car.

The perspective of another eyewitness brought a clearer insight of what happened next. “He sat down in the car looking confused, he tried to drive up a one way street, but a taxi was blocking his path and as he reversed, his car slammed into one of the steel barriers at the foot of the stairs to the One Stop Electronics Store.”

The apparent robbery attempt attracted lots of attention. Some nearby storeowners took precautionary measures, while others tried to get as close as possible to the car as the driver was detained.
